How to Change Your Summoner Name in League of Legends

Updated: 13th April 2025 3 min read

In the ever-evolving world of League of Legends, your Summoner Name is more than just a tag—it’s your identity on the Rift. Whether you chose it a decade ago and it no longer fits, or you’re just ready for a fresh start, Riot Games allows players to change their Summoner Name with a few easy steps. But the process comes with a few caveats, including cost and availability.

Here’s a detailed look at how to change your Summoner Name in League of Legends—and what to know before you do.

What Is a Summoner Name?

Your Summoner Name is the name visible to other players in the client, during champion select, in-game, and on leaderboards. It’s different from your Riot ID, which is used for cross-game identification across Valorant, TFT, Wild Rift, and other Riot titles.

If you’re only interested in changing your name within League of Legends, it’s the Summoner Name you’ll need to update.

Step 1: Open the League of Legends Client

First, log into the League of Legends desktop client with your Riot Games account. This is the platform where all name changes must be made.

Step 2: Go to the Store

Once inside the client:

  1. Click on the Store icon in the top right corner (it looks like a stack of coins).
  2. From the menu on the left-hand side, select “Account” (it’s the icon with a little person).

Step 3: Choose “Summoner Name Change”

Within the Account section, you’ll see an option titled “Summoner Name Change.” Click this to start the process.

At this point, the client will prompt you to:

  • Enter your desired new name
  • Check its availability

If the name you want is already taken, you’ll be prompted to choose another one. Riot enforces a strict name policy, so offensive or impersonating names will be flagged and rejected.

Step 4: Pay the Fee

Changing your Summoner Name comes at a cost. As of 2025, the pricing options are:

  • 13,900 Blue Essence (BE) — the in-game currency earned by playing
  • 1,300 Riot Points (RP) — the premium currency purchased with real money

If you’ve got enough BE from playing regularly, you won’t need to spend a dime. Otherwise, RP offers a quick and easy route.

Step 5: Confirm and Log Out

Once your payment goes through and your new name is accepted, the client will prompt you to log out and back in for the changes to take effect.

After that, your new identity is live—and your old Summoner Name becomes available for others after a set grace period.

Important Notes

  • You can’t change your Summoner Name for free (except in very rare cases, such as server merges or Riot-issued compensation).
  • Your new name must be between 3 and 16 characters.
  • Names that are inactive (i.e. unused for extended periods) may eventually be released for use by others.
  • If your desired name is similar to an existing name, Riot may still flag it due to potential impersonation.

What About Riot ID?

If you’re playing Valorant or other Riot titles, you might want to change your Riot ID instead of your Summoner Name. Riot IDs are updated via your account page on Riot’s official website and can be changed for free every 90 days.

Just be aware: changing your Riot ID does not affect your League Summoner Name.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re rebranding, updating an old username, or simply looking for a change, altering your Summoner Name in League of Legends is straightforward—but not free. With just a few clicks and some in-game currency, you can give your profile a fresh look and hit the Rift with a new name that better reflects who you are as a player.
