How to Get Hextech Chests in League of Legends

Updated: 6th April 2025 1 min read

Whether you’re chasing skins, ward cosmetics, or just want to test your luck, Hextech Chests are one of the best free reward systems in League of Legends. With a bit of effort and good performance, you can collect them regularly — no purchase required.

What Are Hextech Chests?

Hextech Chests are loot boxes that contain randomized rewards such as:

  • Champion shards
  • Skin shards (with a chance for Legacy or Mythic skins)
  • Ward skins, emotes, and Orange Essence
  • Rarely, complete permanent skins or Mythic Essence

Each chest requires a Hextech Key to open — assembled from three Key Fragments.

How to Earn Hextech Chests

1. Play Champions You Own & Perform Well

  • Earn an S-, S, or S+ rating in Summoner’s Rift or ARAM games.
  • The chest is tied to the champion played.
  • You can only earn one chest per champion per season, but resets happen annually.

2. Play With Friends

  • If someone in your premade party earns an S-rank, and you own the champion you’re playing, you also get a chest.

3. Special Missions

  • Riot includes chests as rewards in seasonal events (e.g., Lunar Revel, Worlds, or MSI).
  • You’ll often need to complete objectives or milestones to earn them.

4. Purchase with RP

  • If you’re short on chests or want to speed up your loot collection, you can buy them in the store — either individually or in bundles.

Chest Earning Limits and Tracking

  • You can earn a maximum of four Hextech Chests per week.
  • Progress resets every Monday.
  • Track your availability in the profile > loot tab of the client.

What Makes Chests Valuable?

Even if you’re not chasing skins, opening chests provides materials to:

  • Upgrade skin shards into permanent skins
  • Disenchant shards into Orange Essence
  • Collect Mythic Essence for prestige cosmetics

It’s a system that rewards good performance, encourages teamplay, and provides a pathway to cosmetics for free-to-play users.
