How to Replay Matches in League of Legends

Updated: 23rd September 2025 2 min read

For players looking to improve, relive big plays, or share highlight reels, League of Legends’ built-in replay system is one of the most valuable tools available. Without the need for third-party programs, the client allows users to download, watch, and clip their own matches—perfect for analysis or entertainment.

How to Access and Watch Replays

Riot makes it simple to revisit your recent games:

  • Step 1: After finishing a match, open the League of Legends client and click your Profile in the top-right corner.
  • Step 2: Navigate to the Match History tab. Each recent game will show a small download icon. Click it to save a replay file (with the extension .rofl) to your computer.
  • Step 3: To watch, click “Watch Replay” in Match History or double-click the saved .rofl file from the League of Legends/Replays folder. This launches the client and opens the match.

Within seconds, you’re back on Summoner’s Rift—this time from the spectator’s seat.

Replay Features and Limitations

The replay system includes full playback controls: pause, rewind, fast-forward, speed adjustments, and free camera options. Players can analyze positioning, check map awareness, or simply enjoy clutch teamfights from new perspectives.

But there’s a catch: replays are patch-dependent. Once Riot releases a new game update, old .rofl files become incompatible and unplayable. To preserve moments permanently, many players use recording software like OBS or ShadowPlay while watching a replay.

Saving Highlights

For quick clips, Riot also offers an in-client Record button during replays. This feature captures chosen sequences and saves them as video files, which can then be uploaded, shared with friends, or edited into montages. It’s an easy way to archive that pentakill or game-winning steal.

Watching Other Players’ Replays

Replays aren’t limited to your own matches. Players can:

  • Spectate friends live by right-clicking their name in the client while they’re in a game.

This makes it possible to study pro players or streamers and apply their strategies to your own matches.

Closing Thoughts

League of Legends’ replay system is both a learning tool and a highlight machine. While replays expire with each patch, saving and recording them ensures your best plays live on.

Whether you’re grinding for improvement or just reliving a clutch moment, mastering the replay system is a must for every Summoner.
