Starting your first game of League of Legends might feel overwhelming, but the process is actually quick and beginner-friendly. Whether you’re brand new or just coming back after a break, here’s how to get into the game with minimal fuss.
Download and Install the Game
Download the official client. The installer is free and works on both Windows and macOS. Follow the setup instructions, create an account, and log in.

Complete the Tutorial
When you first open the client, you’ll be prompted to complete a short tutorial. It covers basic controls, objectives, and how to use your champion’s abilities. It’s highly recommended—even for gamers familiar with MOBAs.
Navigate to Game Modes
From the main client dashboard
Click the Play button at the top left.
Choose a mode:
- Co-op vs. AI for practicing with bots
- Normal (Draft or Blind Pick) to play with others
- ARAM for fast-paced, random champions
- Ranked (unlocked after level 30)
For your first few matches, Co-op vs. AI is the safest way to learn without pressure.
Select a Champion
Once in champion select:
- Pick a champion you’ve unlocked or is part of the weekly free rotation.
- Choose two Summoner Spells (Flash and Heal are good defaults).
- Pick your runes (use a preset if unsure).
- Lock in and get ready to load into the Rift.
Start Playing
You’ll spawn at your team’s base. The game begins with buying starting items, then heading to your lane or jungle. The match lasts anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes.
Take it slow, ask teammates questions, and most importantly—have fun.
Final Thought
Starting a League of Legends game is just a few clicks away. With a little guidance and curiosity, you’ll be in your first match in minutes. The climb begins with your first step—welcome to the Rift.
