While a locked camera helps beginners stay oriented, most experienced League of Legends players eventually switch to unlocked camera for improved performance. Unlocked view allows for more freedom, better tracking, and advanced plays.
How to Unlock the Camera
1. Toggle Hotkey
- Press Y (default toggle) to unlock the camera mid-game.
- You can rebind this in Settings > Hotkeys > Camera Control.
2. Disable Permanent Lock
- Press ESC to open settings
- Go to the Camera tab
- Turn off lock camera mode and select Free or Semi-Locked Mode
Advantages of Unlocked Camera
- Track multiple fights at once
- Watch flanks, jungler paths, or enemy rotations
- Use long-range abilities more effectively (e.g. Lux, Xerath, Ashe)
- Roam or respond to calls without being glued to your champion

When to Use It
- Intermediate and high-ELO players
- Jungle and support mains, who need high map awareness
- Split-pushers, who monitor side lanes and global timers
Transitioning from Locked to Unlocked
New players should practice unlocking during safe moments (e.g. walking to lane) and gradually get used to camera dragging with mouse or edge scroll.
