Communicating with teammates—or even opponents—is an essential part of League of Legends gameplay. Whether you need to share a quick strategy tip or coordinate a gank, League’s in‑game chat system makes it fast and straightforward.
Open the Chat Window
Press Enter on your keyboard to bring up the chat box. By default, your messages go to Team Chat, meaning only your allies will see them.

Sending a Whisper (Private Message)
To send a direct message to a single player while still in game, use the /w (or /whisper) command:
/w SummonerName Hey, let’s group mid after this wave!
This private whisper bypasses team chat and delivers your text only to the specified player—even if they’re on the enemy team (provided all‑chat is enabled).
- Quick Whisper via Scoreboard
- Press Tab to open the scoreboard.
- Right‑click the target player’s name.
- Select Whisper from the context menu.
- Type your message and hit Enter.
Chat Channels
- Team Chat: Default channel for allied communication, where you also send emojis.
- All Chat: Press Enter, then click the drop‑down menu in the chat box and select All to message everyone.
- Whisper: Private messages to individual players using the methods above.
Chat Etiquette & Settings
If you cannot message enemies, verify All Chat is enabled in Settings → Interface → Chat.
Avoid spamming or abusive language—persistent offenses can lead to chat restrictions or bans.
Use whispers sparingly during game; teammates generally prefer clear, concise group communication.
With just a few keystrokes or clicks, you can seamlessly coordinate strategies, offer encouragement, or tactfully negotiate peace in the heat of Summoner’s Rift.
