Is League of Legends on Console? A Quick Reality Check

Updated: 5th April 2025 1 min read

Despite persistent fan speculation, League of Legends — Riot Games’ flagship 5v5 MOBA — remains strictly a PC (and macOS) title. There is no native console version of the core game.

PC Exclusivity for the Main Client

Since its 2009 launch, League of Legends has been developed exclusively for Windows and macOS. Riot has made no plans to port the primary client to PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo platforms — a decision driven by the game’s complex UI, frequent balance patches, and infrastructure built around PC matchmaking and controls.

Wild Rift’s Cancelled Console Plans

In 2019, Riot announced League of Legends: Wild Rift, a reimagined version of the game designed for mobile devices. Early marketing materials hinted at eventual console support, but those plans were quietly scrapped. In late 2024, Riot confirmed that the Wild Rift console release had been canceled so the studio could “prioritize mobile investments”.

Console-Friendly League Spin‑Offs

While the main MOBA isn’t on console, Riot’s Riot Forge publishing arm has released several League‑themed titles for PlayStation and Xbox:

  • Ruined King: A League of Legends Story (2021) — a single‑player RPG available on PS4/5, Xbox One/Series, and Switch
  • Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story (2023) — third‑person adventure on PC and Switch

These spin‑offs borrow League characters and lore but play very differently from the core MOBA experience.

What About the Future?

As of early 2025, Riot has no announced timeline for bringing either League of Legends or Wild Rift to console platforms. For now, PC remains the only way to play the original League, while console players can sample Runeterra’s world through Riot Forge’s standalone titles.
