Communication is one of the most powerful tools in League of Legends. But for many players, the in-game chat can also become a distraction—whether due to clutter, spam, or outright toxicity.
Unlike some games, League does not include a built-in /clear command to wipe the chat window of past messages. Still, there are several reliable ways to reduce distractions and effectively “clear” your screen during a match.
Mute and Disable Chat Commands

While you can’t erase old messages, Riot provides a range of commands to control what you see in the first place:
- Mute individual players
Use /mute SummonerName to silence all text from a specific teammate or opponent. This lasts for the duration of the game. - Mute all players
Type /fullmute or /mute all to block every player’s messages and pings. This prevents new chat lines from appearing, keeping your chat effectively clean. - Turn off your own chat
With /muteself, you stop yourself from sending messages. The /deafen command goes a step further by disabling both incoming and outgoing chat, hiding the entire feed from your screen.
These tools don’t delete past text but stop new messages from piling up.
Workarounds for Clearing Chat
If you’re looking for a visual reset, a few workarounds can help:
- Minimize and reopen the chat window: Temporarily hides the chat, giving the impression of a cleared screen.
- Restart the client: When you reload the game, the chat resets entirely for that session.
These tricks are simple but effective if the goal is to reduce clutter without relying on permanent settings.
Disabling Chat Entirely
For players who prefer a completely silent experience, chat can be disabled altogether. Using /chatfilter removes filtered words and phrases, while client settings allow you to toggle chat visibility off completely.
Some players have turned to third-party scripts to automate chat clearing, but Riot explicitly discourages these methods. External tools risk account penalties and often fall under the category of bannable modifications.
Why It Matters
The absence of a /clear function is deliberate. Riot has long emphasized tools that limit exposure to negativity rather than giving players a way to reset after an argument. By focusing on muting and filtering, the game encourages healthier play environments while still giving players control over their screen.
Closing Thoughts
There’s no single command to wipe the slate clean in League of Legends’ chat. But between muting, disabling, and visual resets, players have plenty of ways to minimize distractions. Whether you’re avoiding toxicity or simply decluttering your screen, mastering chat controls can make your matches calmer—and your focus sharper.
