If you’ve ever checked a player’s profile in League of Legends and seen a level in the hundreds — or even thousands — you may have wondered: What’s the max level in League?
The short answer? There isn’t one.
That’s right — since Riot Games overhauled the leveling system in 2018, League of Legends has no level cap. Players can theoretically level up infinitely, and some dedicated Summoners have taken that challenge quite literally.
A Brief History of League’s Level Cap
In the early days of League of Legends, the maximum account level was 30. Reaching level 30 unlocked ranked play, mastery pages, and other essential features. It was a milestone — and for many years, the ultimate one.

But in November 2017, Riot removed the level 30 cap as part of its preseason rewards overhaul, replacing the IP system with Blue Essence and introducing infinite leveling. This change was designed to keep long-term players engaged, while also replacing the need to “prestige” or reset accounts.
What Happens When You Level Up?
Every time you level up in League, you earn a level capsule, which contains:
- Champion shards
- Blue Essence
- Occasionally, cosmetic rewards or emotes (at certain milestone levels)
There are also special milestone rewards at levels like 50, 75, 100, 150, and so on. These include exclusive emotes, borders, and icons that showcase your dedication (and grinding power).
Who Holds the Highest Level?
As of early 2025, the highest recorded player level belongs to a French streamer known as “achieved”, who has surpassed level 5,000 — and counting. Other players in Korea and China have also reached similarly extreme numbers, dedicating thousands of hours (and games) to the grind.
These accounts often play hundreds of ARAMs and bot games, as those modes offer consistent XP and quick matches.
How Much XP Do You Need Per Level?
After level 30, every level requires 2,500 experience points (XP), with occasional scaling changes for milestone levels. XP is earned by playing games — the longer and more competitive the match, the more XP you get.
Key factors that affect XP gain:
- Game mode: Normal Summoner’s Rift and ARAM yield decent XP; Co-op vs AI gives reduced XP after a certain number of games.
- Win or loss: Winning gives slightly more XP, but not dramatically.
- Game length: Extremely short or surrendered games may give less XP.
There are also XP boosts available for purchase with RP, which can double or multiply your XP gains for a limited time.
Why Level Up Beyond 30?
Besides flexing your dedication with a massive profile number, leveling up rewards you with:
- Champion shards to expand your pool
- Blue Essence for unlocks
- Unique milestone emotes
- Progression in event passes
It’s also a badge of honor. A four-digit level often signals a long-time veteran — or at least someone with serious time on their hands.
Final Thoughts
There’s no ceiling for account levels in League of Legends, and that’s by design. Riot wanted a progression system that scales with its endlessly evolving game — and for many players, it’s the perfect backdrop to years of ranked, ARAM, and event grinding.
So, the next time you see a level 1,500 Teemo on your team… maybe say “gg” in advance. They’ve been around the Rift more than most.
